Why Use a Fireplace Mantel?

A fireplace mantel is a material that surrounds a fireplace. The original purpose of a mantelpiece was to protect the wall behind it from the heat of the fire. Today, they are also used for decorative purposes to upgrade the style of homes, aside from safeguarding the surrounding walls from damage.

A fireplace surround that is used as a decorative shelf is placed in front of the fireplace, either on the wall or over the opening. It serves to support items like pictures, vases, and other decorative items. A fireplace mantel can either take the form of an attached or free-standing piece.

Types of Fireplace Mantels

The majority of fireplaces are made with solid masonry that’s designed to support the load without any additional framing. However, wood has become a popular option throughout the years because it’s relatively easy to find, cut, and work with. Nevertheless, homeowners have a variety of options to choose from when it comes to materials for a fireplace surround.

Why Wood Is a Great Mantel Option

When it comes to warming up the room and bringing some extra style and charm into your living space, nothing can beat the addition of wood fireplace mantels. A wooden fireplace surround is a perfect way to add warmth and character to your home. It can be as simple or as ornate as you want it to be, but it will always bring a sense of coziness and charm to any living space.

In making wooden mantels, there are several different types of wood that may be used for the main structure. You can choose from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or cedar, which are great for surviving wear and tear. There are also more affordable soft-wood options such as pine or fir, although they may be prone to cracking over time.

Types of Wooden Fireplace Mantels

With wood becoming more and more popular, we have seen the rise of many different types of wooden mantelpieces available in the market today.

One of the most popular types of mantels are custom-built ones, which can be designed in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit almost any fireplace size.

Live Edge Mantel

Our live edge mantels are hand picked by the client and from there we straight edge the back side that meets the wall of the fireplace and the live edge is cleaned up for finish or preserved with epoxy if you like the bark on natural look.

You may have seen a live-edge mantel before in a hotel lobby or a high-end restaurant, but what exactly is it? A live-edge mantel is essentially a piece of natural wood that has been shaped into the mantel of your fireplace.

A live edge mantel is a unique piece of wood that was cut from the trunk of a tree. This means that the mantel has natural edges, and can be much thicker than a traditional mantelpiece. It also means that the appearance of the wood will be much more rustic and natural looking.

Wood Beam Fireplace Mantel

A wood beam mantel is a type of decorative, ornamental wooden frame that can be placed above your fireplace. The frame itself can range from being simply a place to put pictures of your family and other sentimental knick-knacks to being the focal point of the entire room.

These beams can be handpicked reclaimed barn rafters that can be 100 years old with tenon joints cut into them to create a clean-looking solid white oak beam fabricated in-house at our shop.

Wood beam mantels were popular in European countries like France and Italy, where large, ornate fireplaces are common. It’s important to remember that wood beam mantels weren’t always used as decorations; they also served as structural support for the masonry over the fireplace.

Reclaimed Wood

A reclaimed wood mantel can be described as a wooden board that is designed to sit on top of the fireplace. Reclaimed wood is indeed a popular material for many types of products.

From furniture to flooring, you can easily find plenty of products made out of this type of wood. The reason why people use reclaimed wood is that it has an extremely unique look that cannot be replicated via normal manufacturing methods.

Distressed Wood

You may want to consider a distressed fireplace mantel if you are trying to achieve a rustic, yet elegant look in your space. This type of mantel is typically made from wood that has been meticulously sanded down to look worn and weathered.

However, if you want to achieve that intentional shabby chic look (and not the messy kind!), it’s best to have the wood professionally distressed to provide a more visually appealing focal point in your home.

Hand-Carved Fireplace

A mantel that is hand carved makes a fireplace special. When you buy a mantel that has been crafted by someone, you know they took a lot of time and care in making it. The differences in the mantel add to its uniqueness and can even turn it into an heirloom your grandchildren will actually want rather than just an impractical ornamental piece in your home.

Hand-carved mantels are made from a single piece of wood, rather than being put together from several pieces. This adds to the distinctiveness and durability of the piece because there is no place for water or moisture to get in between the pieces and damage it.
